Who We Are

Benue State Bureau of Statistics (BSBS) serves as the central authority for all official statistical activities in Benue State. It is responsible for data collection, collation, analysis, and interpretation, as well as conducting research and coordinating statistical efforts. BSBS plays a crucial role in supporting policy formulation, development planning, and the evaluation of progress to drive informed decision-making and sustainable growth.

Agency Overview

Provide a brief history of the Bureau.

  • The law establishing the Benue State Bureau of Statistics was passed under the Benue State Statistical Law (2022), signed into law and gazetted in November 2022, and an Acting SG was appointed toward the twilight of the last administration. It is yet to commence full operations or receive funding.
  • The Ag. SG then initiated efforts to activate coordinated statistical activities at MDA & LGA level of Benue State. A good number of MDAs, LGs have PR&S departments at present.
  • Statistical activities in Benue State are yet to receive the needed attention, although the Governor has indicated interest to do the needful.
  • Planning, Research & Statistics in all Local Government Areas exist, discussions with LGA Chairmen is on going to have Data Officers and Statistical Units in all LGAs.
  • The Bureau now has a Stand-alone building but no operational vehicle.
  • The Bureau is on course to host a meeting of the statistical system in the state to constitute a well-structured and coordinated quarterly State Consultative Committee on Statistics. In the meantime, the SG has been coordinating engagements with appointees holding portfolios strongly related to statistics in the State.
  • The DG BSBEPC and the State Attorney-General have initiated the process of reviewing the State Statistics Act to address perceived short comings.
  • All collaborations between the State and donor partners are presently coordinated by the Bureau for International Cooperation and Developments (BICD). Therefore, theSG is working closely with the DG BICD and DG BSBEPC on the Governor’s instructions.
  • So far, the UNDP has posted 19 staff to work for the Bureau of Statistics while being paid by the UNDP, and other collaboration efforts are ongoing.
  • The State is leveraging on the use of statistical data but there is need for more.
  • The Bureau is currently receiving appreciable cooperation and collaboration among Stakeholders but needs to commence full operations to fully harness those cooperations.
  • The Bureau’s former acting Statistician General is now fully confirmed to the status of SG who enjoys the status equivalent to a Director-General as stipulated in the State Statistical Law.
